Last Week's Speaker
Spring Lake Rotary Scribes Report: September 23, 2022
Grand Haven Area Community Foundation
At a lightly attended Friday meeting, Chris Riker was kind enough to join us from the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation.  Chris serves the Foundation as the Vice President of Advancement & Donor Services.  A Hope College graduate, he began work at the GHACF in 2016, and is responsible for leading the asset development and promotional efforts of the Foundation.  Chris also oversees gift recognition, special events, marketing activities, and is charged with creating new funds and delivering services to donors.
The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation is a public, charitable organization (501c3 status) serving Northwest Ottawa County and West Michigan since 1971.  Their mission: To enhance the quality of life for all by working together to collectively address challenges and opportunities throughout West Michigan.
The Foundation just finalized their three-part strategic plan. In order of importance: 1) Impact Community via grants to the most deserving and qualified recipients.  Holly Cole, VP of Grants, helps to manage the grants distributed. 2) Manage Investments with help from the Investment Committee and Director of Finance, Patty MacDonald. 3) Inspire Philanthropy through working with donors and fund holders who want to do something philanthropic, but need help figuring out what makes sense in their circumstances.  This process is managed by Chris Riker.
As of the end of 2021, the GHACF managed nearly $190 million in assets (now less after the markets sold off), across 674 individual funds.  Over $1.2 million was granted in 2021, including $655,095 in college scholarships awarded.  All funds are invested the same way, in the same asset allocation, consisting of approximately 80% in stocks, with 20% in bonds.  This asset mix was arrived at several years back, and has served the fund well through various market conditions.  Through 2021, the trailing 10-year average return was over 11.9%.  Northern Trust is the official investment advisor to the Foundation’s Investment Committee.
The Spring Lake Rotary Club has a donor-advised endowment fund with the GHACF, which was established in 1996.  The fund had grown to over $100,000 as of the end of 2021, but was sitting near $83,000 in value on the most recent statement from August.  Grants from that fund can be requested to be paid out to a 501c3 organization each year in the February/March timeframe, once the spendable amount is determined.  The amount available to give each year is 4% of the balance, which is calculated using a rolling 3-year average of account values as of 12/31 each year.  The total distributed since the fund was opened in 1996 is approximately $29,000, and the most recent gift was to Lilley Cares / Light House Project for the 2021 spendable year.
50/50 Winner:  Bernie Wade (after 7 unsuccessful draws!)
Author's Corner
I know I said last week that "cooler weather" was around the corner ... but I'm not ready for THIS cool.  I also hear that tonight could drop down to freezing.  Ugh!  On the brightside, it is supposed to warm back up some this week...which means no one has the cold to use as an excuse not to come to this week's Homecoming game at Spring Lake!  I hope to see as many of you that can make it there!
Dad joke of the week - What do you call a guy with a rubber toe?    ROBERTO!!! Hahaha (sorry, this one was right up my alley!)
