2/1/2019’s Presenter – Ande Scherf with Mlive
Ande Scherf is the Midwest Director of Human Resources for Advance Local which is the parent company of MLive Media Group. Ande oversees the HR operations for all the newspapers of Mlive throughout Michigan and Cleveland, including the Muskegon Chronicle and Grand Rapids Press. Previous to working for MLive he was was the Senior Manager of Human Resources for Digital First Media and the Denver Post in Colorado. Ande and his wife, Andrea returned to West Michigan in 2016 to be closer to family, friends, and Stan’s Bar. He is a 2007 graduate of Western Michigan University with a degree in Organizational Communication and has been working in various HR roles since graduating. Most importantly, he is a 2002 SLHS graduate and was the March 2002 Rotary Student of the Month.
Advance Local is the 9th largest news organization nationally. They have 10 Media groups that are the leading provider of news and information in their markets:
  • MassLive
  • Alabama Media Group
  • MLive Media Group
  • PennLive
  • Staten Island
  • Parent company owns Conde Nast which publishes Vogue, GQ, vanity Fair, Golf Digest, etc.
Ande shared with the “Current State of Newspapers in 2019” – it isn’t great. Circulation is down by over 50%, advertising revenue is down by over 60%, newsroom employment has declined by almost 50%, and over 500 daily newspapers have closed since the turn of the century. Grand Rapids Press built their brand new printing facility along 96 in 2005 . Today, the print facility produces more than 90% less of metric tons of newsprint than it did in its first year.
Mlive has turned its focus to online over print with over a billion page views a year, millions of unique visitors per month, and millions of followers on social media channels. Most media outlets like Mlive are trying to figure out the best way to monetize their online content to help supplement the decrease in traditional ad buys.
Mlive’s journalism focus is long-form and investigative stories. They were the first to dive into the Flint Water Crisis. They covered the Larry Nassar investigation and trial extensively.
3 of Mlive’s staff members are from the Tri-Cities. Justine McGuire is a 2010 SLHS grad and is the Business/Entertainment/Education Reporter for the Muskegon Chronicle. Brian McVicar is a 2002 SLHS grad and is the Business/Education reporter for the Grand Rapids Press. He was the reporter following and reporting on the Larry Nassar investigation. Jake May is a 2005 GHHS grad is one of MLive’s star photojournalists. He works for the Flint Journal and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his photography series covering the Flint Water Crisis.
The Michigan’s Best Series with John Gonzales and Amy Sherman on Mlive is the brand’s most popular content on the site by far. It brings in over 30 million page views!
